Intent

At Bromet Primary School, we aim to develop confident, creative and articulate writers who can communicate clearly and effectively for a range of audiences and purposes. Our writing curriculum is built around a text-led approach, using high-quality literature to provide rich language models and meaningful contexts for writing.

Through exposure to engaging stories, poetry and non-fiction, pupils develop a love of language while gaining the knowledge and disciplinary skills needed to become fluent, independent writers. Pupils experience a broad range of genres including narratives, reports, explanations, biographies, poetry and persuasive writing, ensuring they write for varied and purposeful outcomes.

Planning is drawn from a range of high-quality, research-informed sources, including Literacy Tree, Literacy Shed, Grammarsaurus and Fred’s Teaching, alongside teacher-designed materials. All planning is rooted in high-quality texts, ensuring pupils are consistently exposed to ambitious vocabulary, strong language models and engaging writing stimuli.

We place a strong emphasis on accuracy and the mechanics of writing. Spelling is taught progressively through Monster Phonics in EYFS and KS1, and through Superhero Spelling and Sporty Spelling in KS2. Handwriting is taught through Letter-join, enabling pupils to develop a fluent, legible and consistent handwriting style. Pupils transition to blue handwriting pens in Year 3 to promote pride and consistency in presentation.

By the time pupils leave Bromet, our aim is that they are confident, reflective writers who can communicate ideas precisely, think critically and write with independence and creativity.

Implementation

Text-Led Writing Units

Writing units are driven by carefully selected high-quality core texts (“Book Drivers”). These texts provide rich vocabulary, strong narrative and organisational models, and meaningful stimulus for writing.

Planning is drawn from a range of high-quality sources, including Literacy Tree, Literacy Shed, Grammarsaurus and Fred’s Teaching, ensuring lessons are engaging, carefully structured and rooted in high-quality literature.

Units typically span a sequence of lessons across several weeks, allowing pupils to explore the text, develop vocabulary and practise key writing skills before producing an extended final piece of writing.

Within each unit, pupils engage in:

  • Vocabulary exploration and language development

  • Grammar and sentence structure practice

  • Short incidental writing opportunities

  • Structured planning and oral rehearsal

  • A carefully planned extended writing outcome (such as a narrative, report, biography or explanation)

Opportunities for oral rehearsal, discussion and collaborative talk are built into writing sequences so pupils can articulate ideas, explore vocabulary and rehearse sentences before writing. This supports pupils in organising their thinking and developing confidence before committing ideas to paper.

Pupils are also explicitly taught the disciplinary knowledge of writing, including how authors structure texts, select vocabulary for effect and craft sentences to influence the reader. Through analysing high-quality models, pupils learn how writers organise ideas, build cohesion and write with purpose.

Grammar and Language Development

Grammar is taught explicitly through daily grammar starters and embedded within writing lessons. Pupils learn accurate terminology and a wide range of sentence structures to support clarity, precision and cohesion in their writing.

Spelling and Phonics

Spelling is taught through a structured and progressive approach.

EYFS & KS1

  • Systematic synthetic phonics through Monster Phonics

KS2

  • Spelling rules, patterns and strategies through Superhero Spelling and Sporty Spelling

This ensures pupils develop secure spelling knowledge that can be applied independently in their writing.

Handwriting and Presentation

Handwriting is taught using Letter-join, supporting pupils to develop fluent, legible cursive handwriting. Pupils practise regularly both in school and at home.

From Year 3, pupils write in blue handwriting pens to promote pride, fluency and consistency in presentation.

Editing, Feedback and Writing Behaviours

Pupils develop independence and resilience through:

  • Timely and purposeful teacher feedback

  • Structured peer discussions

  • Purple-pen editing routines

This supports pupils in reflecting on and improving their writing, developing the habits of effective writers.

Writing Across the Curriculum

Pupils are given regular opportunities to apply and develop their writing skills across the wider curriculum. In subjects such as science, history, geography, religious education, design and technology and PSHE, pupils complete a range of purposeful written tasks.

Examples include:

  • Writing captions and labels for scientific diagrams

  • Recording observations and keeping diaries (such as weather diaries)

  • Writing explanations about materials or scientific concepts

  • Describing historical artefacts or comparing past and present

  • Creating maps with labels and geographical descriptions

  • Writing speech bubbles or reflections in RE lessons

  • Writing instructions, evaluations or adverts linked to design projects

  • Producing posters, recipes or instructions in PSHE

These opportunities allow pupils to apply the grammar, vocabulary and organisational structures taught in English lessons while deepening their understanding of other subjects. Writing across the curriculum helps pupils develop greater fluency, stamina and independence, while recognising writing as an essential tool for communicating knowledge.

Assessment

Teachers assess writing through ongoing formative assessment within lessons, extended writing outcomes and regular moderation. This ensures consistent expectations across the school and enables teachers to identify next steps in pupils’ writing development.

Impact

The impact of our writing curriculum is evident in the quality, accuracy and creativity of pupils’ writing.

Confident and Fluent Writers

Pupils can write extended, well-structured pieces across a wide range of genres. Regular opportunities for drafting and editing strengthen writing stamina, clarity and accuracy.

Strong Vocabulary and Language Development

High-quality texts expose pupils to rich vocabulary and varied language structures, which pupils confidently apply in their own writing.

Clear Progression of Skills

Because writing knowledge is carefully sequenced from EYFS to Year 6, pupils build skills cumulatively and are well prepared for the expectations of secondary school.

Engaged and Motivated Learners

Pupils write with purpose and enthusiasm, supported by inspiring texts and meaningful writing outcomes.

High Expectations and Achievement

Consistent teaching approaches, strong subject knowledge and regular extended writing opportunities ensure pupils achieve well. Pupils leave Bromet as independent, capable writers who are fully prepared for the next stage of their education.
