Spelling at Bromet Primary School

At Bromet Primary School, we are committed to helping children develop strong spelling skills as part of their wider literacy learning. We use a combination of Superhero Spelling and Rollama’s Sporty Spelling to provide a dynamic, interactive approach that caters to all ages and abilities.

Our spelling programme builds on children’s phonics knowledge, following our Monster Phonics scheme, and covers the full scope of the Key Stage 2 spelling curriculum. Lessons focus on understanding spelling patterns, not just memorising words, and take place at least twice a week.

Intent

Our aim is to ensure all children develop strong, confident spelling skills that support their reading, writing, and overall literacy. We want children to:

  • Understand spelling patterns rather than just memorising words.

  • Build independent spelling fluency across all subjects.

  • Enjoy learning spellings through interactive, engaging activities.

  • Apply spelling knowledge confidently in their writing.

Implementation

Our spelling programme is delivered through:

  • Regular, discrete lessons at least twice a week, focusing on understanding spelling rules and patterns.

  • Weekly spelling words with home practice and weekly tests to track progress.

  • Interactive activities, including:

    • Defining words with child-friendly meanings and example sentences

    • Recognising correct spellings through audio games and spotting errors

    • Independent spelling practice through anagrams, missing letters, and spelling bee-style challenges

    • Superhero-themed and sports-themed games to reinforce learning in a fun, memorable way

  • Partner work and talk time, giving children opportunities to discuss spelling rules and patterns.

How Our Spelling Programme Works

  • Interactive Lessons – Children explore words through games, partner work, and talk activities, reinforcing patterns in a memorable way.

  • Multi-Sensory Approach – Activities combine visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic learning, making spelling enjoyable and accessible for all pupils.

  • Structured Learning – Activities guide children from recognising words to confidently spelling them independently.

By combining Superhero Spelling and Sporty Spelling, our approach makes learning to spell engaging, interactive, and effective. Children develop confidence, fluency, and enjoyment in spelling, supporting their wider literacy development.

Impact

Through this approach, children at Bromet Primary School:

  • Develop strong, confident spelling skills that transfer to their writing.

  • Gain independence in spelling and fluency in applying rules.

  • Enjoy spelling as an engaging, interactive part of their learning.

  • Demonstrate improved accuracy in written work and increased confidence in literacy overall.

By the end of each key stage, every child has a secure grasp of spelling patterns, statutory words, and strategies to tackle unfamiliar words independently.
