PSHE
Curriculum Intent
It is our intent to grow healthy, independent and responsible members of the community who have the tools to make ‘good’ choices in life.
We aim for pupils to have an understanding of how they are maturing personally and socially and develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. We provide our pupils with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of the diverse society in which we live.
Curriculum Implementation
The PSHE curriculum includes Sex and Relationship Education (SRE). At Bromet, we believe that high quality Relationships Education is an entitlement for all pupils. SRE has an important role in supporting school to implement the 9 protected characteristics of The Equality Act 2010 so is positively inclusive in terms of gender, sexual orientation, disability, ethnicity, culture, age, religion or belief or other life-experience.
The PSHE curriculum supports many of the principles of safeguarding and links closely to schools Safeguarding, Spiritual, Moral, Social & Cultural (SMSC) and British Values
We recognise our duty to ‘actively promote’ and provide opportunity for children to understand the fundamental British Values (Democracy, The Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect and Tolerance) first set out by the Government in the ‘Prevent’ strategy in 2014, for those with different faiths and beliefs in order for them to become fair, tolerant and confident adults in a forever challenging world.
According to the National Curriculum, every school needs to have a broad and balanced curriculum that:
• promotes the spiritual, moral, social, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school;
• prepares pupils at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life;
• promotes British values.
From September 2020, primary schools in England also need to teach Relationships and Health Education as compulsory subjects and the Department for Education strongly recommends this should also include age-appropriate Sex Education.
Schools also have statutory responsibilities to safeguard their pupils (Keeping Children Safe in Education, DfE, 2019) and to uphold the Equality Act (2010).
JIGSAW
Jigsaw is a whole-school approach and embodies a positive philosophy and creative teaching and learning activities to nurture children’s development as compassionate and well-rounded human beings as well as building their capacity to learn.
The six termly units are tailored to each year group under the following themes: The units are taught through a spiral curriculum, being explored in greater depth and resources being tailored to each age group.
Every teacher also has access to online resources, which include lesson plans and additional resources for use/ amendment. This is including additional issues that may arise in classrooms regarding certain topics, e.g. LGBTQ, feelings and friendships
We embed our school values, promoted throughout the curriculum wherever possible of; Ambition, Generosity , Optimism Respect, Adventure and Bravery. The British Values are also embedded throughout the curriculum where possible.
As well as using the JIGSAW scheme, we celebrate and discuss issues, hold workshops and assemblies on anti-bullying, e-safety, mental health and wellbeing and first aid.

At Bromet we prioritise physical and mental health and wellbeing, providing children with skills to evaluate and understand their own wellbeing needs, practice self-care and contribute positively to the wellbeing of those around them. We are committed to creating a positive, safe and nurturing environment, where all members of the school and wider community will be respected and valued. Children are enabled to develop the vocabulary and confidence needed to clearly articulate their thoughts and feelings openly and know when and how they can seek the support of others whom they trust and respect. They will apply their understanding of society to their everyday interactions, from the classroom to the wider community.
Through our PSHE curriculum, we believe we can enhance children’s education and help them to become caring, respectful, responsible and confident individuals and citizens.
